Films

“Metropolis” (1927)
In the 21st century, a dehumanized proletariat labors nonstop in an underground city beneath a luxurious city of mile-high skyscrapers. Director Fritz Lang’s film creates a vision of a not-so-unlikely future that became central to various futurists and films (e.g., “The Matrix”). Part of the Summer Film School series. $7 adults, $6 faculty/staff, $5 seniors, $4 students.
Wednesday, July 10; 7 to 9 p.m. in the Browning Cinema, DeBartolo Performing Arts Center

Summer Film School
Summer Film School is a great way to learn how to recognize and analyze the unique conventions movies use to have flat, giant images on a wall that make us laugh, weep and cheer. This year’s series, broken into four classes, focuses on the world of tomorrow. The classes will ask and answer how films, throughout various points in history, have imagined and created the future. $12 course fee includes a 30-minute lecture, screening and post-film discussion. Sign up by July 10.
Wednesdays, July 10 through 31; 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Browning Cinema, DeBartolo Performing Arts Center
