Arts and Performances
Film: “Alien” (1979)
From cool, sinister textures to stomach-churning special effects, Ridley Scott’s “Alien” reinvented monster-from-space horror as something mesmerizing, inescapable and strangely beautiful. It also introduced a new American action hero, Sigourney Weaver, as Ripley, plus the titular Xenomorph. 6:30 p.m. lecture, 7 p.m. screening, then a discussion. $7 adults, $6 ND fac/staff, $5 seniors, $4 students.
Wednesday, Aug. 2; 7 to 9 p.m. in the Browning Cinema, DeBartolo Performing Arts Center
Spotlight Exhibit: “New York City Surrealism and Texas Progressivism in the 1940s”
Visit Rare Books & Special Collections to see an exhibit highlighting two new acquisitions of limited runs of two American periodicals from the 1940s, New York’s “View” and “The Texas Spectator.” Each captures part of the zeitgeist of the 1940s — the avant-garde and surrealist art scene from 1940 through 1947 and Texas politics between 1945 and 1948. Learn more.
Mondays through Fridays until Aug. 4; 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Rare Books & Special Collections (Room 102), Hesburgh Library
