The Presidential Team Irish Award program recognizes staff teams that exemplify the University’s Core Values of integrity, accountability, teamwork, leadership in mission and leadership in excellence. A select number of staff teams receive the award each year as a recognition of significant accomplishments, collaborations or initiatives where they demonstrated Core Values. At each home football game, before 80,000 football fans, one of the Team Irish Award winning teams take the field, during a television timeout, to receive the award. The first Presidential Team Irish Award recipient of 2019 is the Building Bridges Mentoring Program, which assists the University’s underrepresented student population to succeed academically. The program, which is part of Multicultural Student Programs and Services (MSPS), helps students navigate the institution, explore career paths and succeed in their endeavors. The Building Bridges team was honored at the game against New Mexico on September 14.
One student has this to say about the program, “Building Bridges had a major role in my path towards graduate school because of the guidance from my faculty mentor and peer mentor during my first year. With their help, I was able to get involved in research quickly in a lab that I loved.”
Of the most recent Notre Dame graduates who participated in Building Bridges, 89 percent of STEM majors conducted research before the end of their sophomore year and 91 percent of business majors interned with a company before they were seniors.
