The University is embracing an updated way to coordinate reduced work restriction tasks that benefits both employees recovering from injury and teams across the University. Notre Dame’s Stay-At-Work (SAW) program gives employees a way to stay engaged while on working restrictions by taking part in light-duty tasks both in their home department and areas outside of their typical work environment.
Notre Dame’s Stay-At-Work program is based on a collaborative model in which departments across campus populate a central repository of light-duty tasks. When an employee is given a restricted duty status by their provider, Risk Management and Safety works with the provider to identify tasks that would best meet the employee's medical restrictions. Oftentimes, this allows the employee to continue working during their rehabilitation.
For employees, SAW can mean keeping more of their regular earnings, maintaining skills, and staying connected socially at work.
Additionally, there are benefits across the organization when an employee is able to work in other areas on campus during their rehabilitation. The experience can lead to a better understanding of how other departments operate, foster new or deeper work relationships, and introduce opportunities for individuals who may have an interest in positions outside of their home department.
“It’s the right thing for our colleagues and our University to create ways for everyone to stay connected to their work, even through challenging circumstances,” Mike Seamon, vice president for University Operations, Events, and Safety. “Furthermore, with safety as our top priority, this program ensures that connection is maintained in a way that is the safest and most beneficial for each individual employee.”
