The Chinese New Year, known in China and East Asia as the Spring Festival, starts this Friday, Feb. 12. The celebration lasts two weeks, culminating with what's known as the Lantern Festival. Vivian Zhou, program assistant at the Beijing Global Gateway painted the above piece of art to celebrate the Spring Festival and the Year of the Ox.

Zhou has been painting since she was a child, as it was something her father did with her as well. She enjoys using the Chinese ink style technique, but also paints with watercolor and colored pencil. Her art is inspired by her travels and encounters with local people and places.
