Justin Howell

Justin Howell is starting his seventh year at Notre Dame. A little more than a year ago, he moved into his current role as the digital asset media program manager for Notre Dame Studios. He is now part of the Video Platform Management team in the Office of Information Technology. Howell works in the Rex and Alice A. Martin Media Center in Corbett Family Hall.

How would you describe your job?

I manage a media asset management system called CatDV, used by many of the video and media production groups on campus. This system provides a plethora of automation tools so that videographers and content creators can simply drop their footage in a specified place, and then have it available and tagged in the formats they need for editing. The system also has robust tools around logging custom metadata against the content to make it easy to find later, and archiving tools to make sure the content is backed up and safe.

What do you like most about your job?

I get to build automation, troubleshoot workflows and really work the puzzle part of my brain! The environment I work in is also rather fast-paced and keeps things fresh.

What makes you feel appreciated?

Honestly, recognition of the work I do outside of the folks or groups that would see it on a day-to-day basis — essentially what you’re doing with these NDWorks segments!

What do you like most about working at Notre Dame?

First, I always remind myself that I’m incredibly lucky to work on such a beautiful campus. I try to take many breaks outside enjoying the architecture, nature and scenery. The folks I work with are also incredible, and I get to work on some really cool projects to show off Notre Dame.

Do you have a fun fact you’d like to share?

You will rarely, if ever, find me on a bicycle. I prefer my tricycle, but I also ride a unicycle from time to time!
