It's award nomination season. Nominations for the following awards will be accepted through Monday, Feb. 24. In most cases, the awards are reserved for faculty. Staff and administrators are eligible for some awards. See nomination specifications below.
Office of the Provost Awards
The provost's office coordinates two awards to honor individuals' exemplary contributions to undergraduate education.
Dockweiler Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising
Nominate a faculty or exempt staff member.
The Dockweiler Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising recognizes three full-time faculty or exempt staff who demonstrate a sustained commitment to undergraduates through outstanding mentoring, academic advising, or career counseling. The award aims to demonstrate the valued role such assistance plays in helping students reach their academic and professional goals.
Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C., Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching
The Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C., Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching annually honors up to 20 faculty members who have had a profound influence on the undergraduate learning experience, elevated students’ intellectual engagement, and fostered students’ ability to express themselves effectively within a disciplinary context.
In addition to the Dockweiler and Joyce Awards, the provost’s office administers several of the awards listed below, whose winners are announced in May at the annual President’s Dinner for faculty. Awards are grouped by the campus entity that presents them.

Faculty Award
The Faculty Award singles out that faculty member who, in the opinion of his or her colleagues, has contributed outstanding service to the University of Notre Dame, such as through leadership activities, mentoring faculty colleagues, or exemplary dedication to students.
Reinhold Niebuhr Award
Nominate a faculty member or administrator.
The Reinhold Niebuhr Award is given annually to a faculty member or administrator whose body of academic work (e.g., articles, books, creative works) and life promote or exemplify the area of social justice in modern life. All members of the Notre Dame community are invited to submit recommendations for this award.
Grenville Clark Award
The Grenville Clark Award is given to a faculty member or administrator whose voluntary activities serve to advance the cause of peace and human rights.
Presidential Award
Nominate a faculty member or administrator.
The Presidential Award is given to a member of the faculty and/or the administration for distinguished service to the University over an extended period of time. The presentation of a citation and a stipend is made to the recipient.
Rev. Paul J. Foik, C.S.C., Award
The Rev. Paul J. Foik, C.S.C., Award is given to a library faculty member who has contributed significantly to library service to the Notre Dame community or to the library profession through personal scholarship or substantive engagement in professional associations. All members of the Hesburgh Libraries and Kresge Law Library faculties with two or more years of service are eligible.
Thomas P. Madden Award
Nomination information: If you are a first-year student or first-year advisor and wish to nominate someone for the 2020 Madden Award, please contact Robin Hoeppner, assistant to the assistant provost for academic advising.
The Thomas P. Madden Award honors that member of the faculty who contributed the most to the teaching of first-year students. Nominations are submitted by first-year students and first-year advising faculty.
Provost’s Award for Academic Support of Student-Athletes
Nominate a faculty or full-time staff member.
The Provost’s Award for Academic Support of Student-Athletes honors a full-time Notre Dame faculty or staff member who consistently works to support student-athletes in reaching their full academic potential.

Research Achievement Award
Nomination information: A faculty member interested in initiating a nomination for the Research Achievement Award should send his/her dean the nominee’s CV and a two-page letter that addresses the nominee’s past research accomplishments and future research potential while also offering examples of the nominee’s universal recognition as a research leader.
The Research Achievement Award, incorporated in 2001, honors a distinguished faculty member who has made significant contributions to scholarship in his or her discipline and to the research and graduate education goals of the University.

Rev. William A. Toohey, C.S.C., Awards
Nominate a Holy Cross priest for the first award or a faculty or staff member for the second one.
Two Rev. William A. Toohey, C.S.C., Awards were established to honor the memory of a Holy Cross priest who served as director of Campus Ministry.
- The Rev. William A. Toohey, C.S.C., Award for Preaching is given to a Holy Cross priest who has made significant contributions to the University of Notre Dame in many different ways and in particular as a homilist.
- The Rev. William A. Toohey, C.S.C., Award for Social Justice is given to a member of the Notre Dame faculty or staff who has dedicated himself or herself to teaching and research that emphasize the social justice dimension of the Gospel in an exemplary way.
