ECDC kindergartners create replica of Hesburgh Library

ECDC kindergarten Hesburgh project

Come see a replica of Hesburgh Library — complete with books, visitors, exhibits from Rare Books & Special Collections and Notre Dame Archives, hanging lights, and even a reflection in the reflecting pool. It was created by kindergarten students at Notre Dame’s Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC).

Each year, the kindergarten class conducts a community study of Notre Dame's campus, with visits to the Basilica, the Main Building, Notre Dame Stadium and Hesburgh Library. During these visits, the students make detailed sketches, journal their experiences and interact with ND faculty and staff. The study concludes with a culminating project in which the class divides into groups to create models of ECDC, Hesburgh Library, Notre Dame Stadium, the Basilica and the Main Building. The kindergarteners visited the Circulation Desk, saw a selection from Rare Books and Special Collections and sports archival materials, and also took a trip to the Mahaffey Family Presidential Suite on the 14th floor.

The replica will be on display in the Entrance Gallery through Aug. 2.
