On Monday, Feb. 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated large areas of central Turkey and northwest Syria. The death toll has surpassed 17,000 and continues to climb. Later that day, the region experienced a second quake of magnitude 7.7.
Members of the campus community who wish to assist are encouraged to give to Catholic Relief Services (CRS). This trusted organization has a long-standing partnership with the University and is on the ground providing urgently needed care and support to those affected.
In coordination with authorities, CRS is already bringing displaced people to safe, open spaces and distributing hot meals and clothing. Monetary gifts will help CRS provide safe shelter and access to food, clean water and hygiene supplies.
Students needing support on campus can be directed to the following University resources:
- University Counseling Center (UCC) – All students seeking services for the first time at the UCC are encouraged to attend an in-person drop-in appointment during scheduled drop-in hours.
- International Student and Scholar Affairs (ISSA) – The staff at ISSA serve as an important resource to help students navigate the challenges of studying away from home. ISSA can be contacted at issa@nd.edu or 574-631-1138.
- Campus Ministry – The staff within Campus Ministry are available to offer their support and pastoral care to all members of our community. Reach out by calling 574-631-7800 or stop by during Need to Talk office hours to speak with a campus minister.
