Building beds and relationships with colleagues

Hr Staining Beds

Human Resources staff recently served a day with Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), a nonprofit organization dedicated to building, assembling and delivering bunk beds for children and families in need. With the motto “no kid sleeps on the floor in our town,” SHP works to provide a bed to any child in a community who needs one.

On Thursday, Jan. 16, bundled up in warm winter gear, dozens of Notre Dame HR staff members piled into two buses and headed to the build site at the Elkhart County Fairgrounds in Goshen. When they arrived, an SHP team offered a warm welcome, then divided them into groups and instructed them on what to do.

Some HR staff measured and cut boards, while others sanded or drilled. Some co-workers stained bed frames, while others branded the wood. Another group assembled the beds.

Kristy Leininger, an officer assistant in HR, says the day was meaningful. “It was amazing to see our group dive in without hesitation, step out of their comfort zones and work together on such a wonderful project. It warms my heart to know we are making a difference in children’s lives and to see our team work together ways we never before had. We not only built beds but we built relationships. It was incredible to see the cohesiveness and camaraderie.”

The day of service was an opportunity to engage in meaningful work alongside other Notre Dame colleagues. By the end of the day, HR staff assembled 20 beds for children in need.

Following the build, a few HR staff members even signed up to deliver a bed to a local family. To inquire about volunteer opportunities with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, visit bit.ly/heavenly-peace.
