A Conversation With . . . Tiffany Russell

Meet Tiffany Russell, a staff social worker at the University Counseling Center who provides mental health counseling to students. Russell has been working at Notre Dame for four years and serves as the president of the Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA). BFSA is an employee resource group dedicated to the recruitment, support, positive valuation of, and inclusion of Black faculty and staff at the University.

Russell was recently awarded the Black Excellence Staff Award by Notre Dame Student Government and the Black Student Association. NDWorks spoke with Russell about her work and her passion for her career and working with BFSA.

What do you like most about your job?

I enjoy working with Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) students and being able to help underrepresented students navigate life at this prestigious university.

What makes you feel appreciated?

What makes me feel appreciated is being given opportunities to share different perspectives.

What do you like most about working at Notre Dame?

I love being able to engage with students as well as connecting with the amazing faculty and staff that work here.

How did you come to be involved with the BFSA?

I began participating in BFSA events when I started working on campus. I love engaging with the BFSA community and wanted to become more involved.

What is the most rewarding part of working with BFSA?

The most rewarding part of working with BFSA is getting to know all of the amazing Black faculty and staff who are employed here. I love seeing and hearing the incredible stories and work that is being done.

What are some upcoming events with BFSA?

BFSA partners with Legends to host monthly karaoke nights. The next one is Thursday, February 20. We are planning a Black Leaders Panel on Friday, February 28. Visit bfsa.nd.edu for more details.

What are some goals for BFSA in the coming year?

BFSA’s goals for the new year include continuing to build connection and community, highlighting and showcasing Black excellence, and supporting the University’s efforts for inclusive practices.

Who can join BFSA, and why should they join?

Membership is open to all faculty, staff, and administrators employed by the University. No matter where you work or what you do, you’re welcome within our community. BFSA is a space where you can build relationships and find support.
